Everybody is familiar with the feeling that things are not as they should be. That you are not successful enough, your relationships not satisfying enough. That you don’t have the things you crave.
In this video we want to talk about one of the strongest predictors of how happy people are, how easily they make friends and how good they are at dealing with hardship. An antidote against dissatisfaction so to speak: Gratitude.

Ohai! For a change a few personal words. My name is Philipp and I started this channel almost seven years ago - you don’t know my voice but you have heard my words because I write most of our scripts. Oh boy. This was a hard video to make. Gratitude felt vaguely risky to do as a topic. It has this aura of cheap Instagram hashtag self help stuff. Some of you will hate this video deeply, and the thought of that made me pretty anxious writing it. Gratitude was not supposed to be a video topic originally. Just like the Nihilism and Loneliness videos, the script was based on personal struggles and part of the process of dealing with them. And so it felt right to make gratitude a video too. But Kurzgesagt is not a self help channel, so we'll keep this sort of content at roughly one or two per year. We hope they are helpful to some of you. If you care for my take on how to practice Gratitude, we made a Kurzgesagt Gratitude journal to combine the science with practical tips. shop.kurzgesagt.org/ Edit: PRE-ORDER is available again. Please note: You don’t need to buy this or anything else to practice gratitude - you only need a pen, a piece of paper and 5 minutes. Thank you for watching our videos and reading this comment. Being able to do Kurzgesagt means a lot. To me and the whole team. - Philipp

I have a very scientific approach to life and self-improvement, and it's over two year I keep a gratitude diary. So... spot on, Kurzgesagt and Philipp! But I understand your reticence about not looking like a self-help channel. I think that, as long as you cite your scientific resources (published papers, etc), at least in the description, you are on the safe side.

I don't mean this in a rude way at all, but why should I be grateful for things that everyone else around me already has? It sounds a little condescending to me, as if someone is telling me to be grateful for my life because I could be so much worse off. I understand I could be worse off, but it really doesn't help with my mental state and situation right now.

The only reason for dissatisfaction is the fact that there is a You in a another universe with the dream life that you wished to live..Example: all your fictional characters exists.....doing the adventure of a life time you wanted..the enjoyment you derserved where the time You lived in does not hinder your ability to enjoy and explore..heck there might be a you right now whose aging process has stopped and is exploring the infinite universe..

All this did was make me more self-loathing, it made me feel miserable for hating my job, for hating what I do, for feeling lost and not knowing my purpose, and for not knowing what I want or who I really am. This caused me to be more depressed. What is the point of going to a job I hate, to work for people who wouldn't care if I died, to make money for people I dont like, so that I can get by. What a meaningless existence. I thought this might help, ive been so lost, and unsure of where to go or what to do with my life, feeling so pointless. I have fought for so long to get by until one of the many plans I have put into action pays off so I can finally be free to explore who I am and what I want to do, but the more and more I try, the more and more I feel smothered, set adrift in the seas of misery. Life is pain, it is misery, and most of all it is a disappointment. I hope someday to feel what you all feel.

Oh come on, there are tons of studies about multiple subjects - but so what? It doesn't mean that positive psychology and gratitude makes our lives much better. It's really sad to see you so confident about those results. As a pop-sci channel you should at least share with us some of the criticism of gratitude and positive psychology...

It all comes down to genetics. If you are small nobody cares about you, if you aren’t good looking you aren’t going to get any girls and nobody will want to associate with you. If you are an introvert people will treat you worse than a rapist. That’s just the way life is. People are disgusting.

Insatisfaccion makes us go further, but nothing will be enough... Never. We humans go goal after goal, if we were easy to satisfy, then we wouldnt want to keep living, we would only be surviving... If we were like that, we were animals, if we were like that... We were happy... That's why sadness is our real and most complicated feeling... Because it shows us the bad things in our life, and we try to make it better, but it will never be enough, not for you, not for science, not for anybody... We can't stop, because tomorrow is another day, we need more goals... This... Is sick.

from my own experience (although I try to practice it more) one time I had an epiphany while deeply reflecting on what gives us humans the most fulfilment/satisfaction in life and I realised that there are only two feelings that could give us maximum satisfaction that that is love and gratitude. These two are the best antidote because you don't need a crazy amount of either to feel/experience it

The fact that there are video's out there like these and also being watched often proves many share the same feelings of loneliness and unhappiness. It's like an epidemic. I believe the main reason for this is the inhumanity of the system and the selfishness of a select few who are in control of the resources.
